How to Download Twitter (X) Videos on Android With Chrome

Android makes it easy to save files from the web, and downloading a video from X (formerly Twitter) is no exception once you know where to paste the link. This guide uses Chrome and Twget, explains where the MP4 lands, how it shows up in your gallery, and what changes if your phone ships with Samsung Internet instead.

Before you start

• Any Android phone or tablet with Chrome (or another browser; see the Samsung Internet section below).
• A link to a public X post containing the video.
• No X account, no login, and no app to install. Twget runs in the browser and does not store the file.

Step 1: Copy the post link from the X app

1. Open the X app and go to the post with the video.
2. Tap the Share icon under the post.
3. Tap Copy link.

Step 2: Download with Twget in Chrome

1. Open Chrome and go to Twget.
2. Long-press the input box, tap Paste, then tap Download.
3. Twget shows a preview with the available qualities and file sizes. Tap the download button next to the one you want.
4. Chrome starts the download and shows a notification with progress. Some Chrome versions first ask you to confirm; tap Download if prompted.

Step 3: Find the file

Google's Chrome help page on downloading a file on Android states that downloads are saved in your default download location, and it gives two ways to reach them:

• From Chrome: tap the three-dot More menu, then Downloads. You can open, share, rename, or delete files from that list.
• From the Files app: open your phone's Files app (called Files, Files by Google, or My Files depending on the manufacturer) and look in the Downloads folder.

On most phones the physical location is Internal storage/Download. If you have moved Chrome's download location to an SD card, look there instead.

Why the video also appears in your gallery

Android's gallery apps scan common media folders, including Download, so an MP4 saved by Chrome normally appears in Google Photos, Samsung Gallery, or whichever gallery you use within a few seconds. In Google Photos it shows up under the device folder named "Download." Google's backup help page explains that device folders like this are backed up only if you turn backup on for that folder, so a downloaded X video stays on your phone unless you choose to back it up.

If the gallery does not refresh, opening the file once from the Files app or restarting the gallery app usually triggers a rescan.

Step 4: Play, share, or move the file

The file is a standard MP4 using the AVC (H.264) codec, which the MDN video codec guide lists as supported across all major browsers and devices. It will open in any video player, upload to messaging apps, and import into editors without conversion.

To keep your Download folder tidy, you can move the video to Movies or another folder from the Files app. Gallery apps will pick it up in the new location.

Samsung Internet notes

Samsung phones ship with Samsung Internet as the default browser, and many people use it instead of Chrome. The Twget steps are identical; the differences are in where things are and what the browser calls them:

• Download list: tap the three-line menu at the bottom right, then Downloads.
• Location: by default, Samsung Internet saves to the same Download folder, so you will find files in My Files > Downloads and in Samsung Gallery.
• Save prompts: Samsung Internet can be set to ask where to save each file. If you turned that on, choose the location when prompted.
• Secret mode: downloads made in Secret mode are still saved to storage, but the download history is not kept.

If a download appears to do nothing in Samsung Internet, check its notification shade first; it sometimes shows the confirmation prompt there rather than on the page. Failing that, open the same Twget page in Chrome, which is on virtually every Samsung device.

Handling large files

X lets Premium accounts post very long videos. According to X's chunked media upload documentation, a standard account can upload up to 20 minutes and 8 GB, and Premium accounts up to 125 minutes and 16 GB. After X re-encodes those, the files you download are much smaller, but a long 1080p clip can still run to hundreds of megabytes. Twget shows an approximate size next to each quality, so:
